Abstract

This essay explored the relationship between word and picture in the configuration of the children’s picture book by Edward Lear and Edward Gorey, having as its basis two previously selected works:  Viagem numa peneira (2011), the Brazilian edition that is analyzed side by side with the original A book of nonsense, published in 1846, both by Edward Lear, and The epiplectic bicycle (1969), by Edward Gorey. The works were analyzed in light of the concepts of image according to Wolff (2005), of text and image according to Necyk (2007), of picture book according to Linden (2011), of relationship between image and word by Nikolajeva and Scott (2011), of nonsense literature according to Sewell (1952), as of a comparative methodology, emphasizing its similarities and differences in the contexts to which the authors belonged to. The development of our reflection positions Gorey as heir to the production of Lear and as author of children’s picture books in connection with the contemporary nonsense.

positions Gorey as heir to the production of Lear and as author of children’s picture books in connection with the contemporary nonsense.
